Law Enforcement Science I 11-12 Grade
3.0 Credits, 2 Semesters, Herndon Career Center - Building C
Prerequisite(s): Min 2.0 GPA; 90% attendance record, successful completion of English II and Algebra I with a C or better.
This year-long course offers students a comprehensive introduction to law enforcement and police science, preparing them for further education and potential careers in criminal justice and related fields. Students will explore the historical development of law enforcement, examine the structure of the criminal justice system, and investigate a variety of career paths, including policing, corrections, dispatch, and forensic sciences. Through hands-on learning and critical discussions, students will analyze real-world incidents, including police interactions, crime scenes, and case studies, using videos, photographs, and reports.
Emphasis will be placed on developing leadership competencies and ethical decision-making skills, while also exploring the societal factors that influence law enforcement practices and public perception. Students can earn industry-recognized certifications in areas such as CPR/First Aid, FEMA ICS/NIMS, OSHA10, dispatch procedures, and other core competencies essential to public safety careers. This course is eligible for up to six hours of dual credit through Missouri State University and six hours through Metropolitan Community College (MCC).
Fees & Expectations: Students may be expected to purchase a pair of khaki style pants and black leather tennis shoes or boots.
Law Enforcement Science II 12 Grade
3.0 Credits, 2 Semesters, Herndon Career Center - Building C
Prerequisite(s): Completion of Law Enforcement/Police Science I with a B-or better, 90% attendance during first year of the course; CPR/First Aid, FEMA ICS/NIMS, OSHA 10 certifications
This course is designed for students ready to expand their skills through leadership, communication, and professional experiences. Building on prior knowledge, students will take on a more active role in class discussions, scenario facilitation, and peer mentoring. Emphasis is placed on developing strong leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills essential for careers in public safety. Students will engage in deeper analysis of law enforcement policies, current events, and ethical dilemmas while honing their ability to communicate clearly and think critically under pressure.
Throughout the year, students will participate in job shadowing opportunities, professional interviews, and field experiences with local law enforcement agencies, corrections, dispatch centers, and other criminal justice professionals. Select students may also qualify for internships, providing valuable, hands-on exposure to the field. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs and employment in criminal justice by refining their professional readiness, enhancing their understanding of community-oriented policing, and reinforcing the importance of integrity, accountability, and service in public safety roles.
